Glow Recipe is an online store
co-founded by two women with nearly 20 years combined experience within the US
and Korean beauty industry in marketing and product development. Glow Recipe
aims to showcase smaller brands that prioritize natural ingredients (Hello, are
you speaking directly to me? I think you are, because YES, I’m so here for
that!).
The two products sent to me were from a brand I’d never
heard of, but have certainly become a fan of since. The brand is Whamisa and the
products are Organic Flowers Fermentation Olive Leaf Mist and Organic Flowers
Water Cream. I’ll start with the mist review first.
The Glow Recipe website gives us a rundown of Organic
Flowers Fermentation Olive Leaf Mist:
“The Gist:
An organic refreshing mist that instantly hydrates and
soothes skin. For all skin types.
How it works:
Whamisa utilizes a natural
fermentation process to distill and preserve the potency of selectnatural
ingredients. This refreshing mist is formulated with 92.5% organic ingredients,
which are naturally fermented to preserve maximum efficacy. This unique mist is
water-free – instead it relies on a blend of Olive, Green Tea Extract and Aloe
Vera extract to help rehydrate and calm dry, depleted skin. BDIH Standard
Certified.
Free of:
Parabens, Silicones,
Mineral Oils, Synthetic dyes & fragrances
Our
Insight:
This is a must have for Glow Recipe offices, as skin
becomes sensitive and dry from air conditioning in the summer and heating in the
winter. Keep it on your desk and pamper skin throughout the
day.”
Once I read that I was impressed, I asked Glow Recipe if
they could send me over an ingredient list just to make sure this product was
going to be up to snuff, once I received this list I wasn’t just impressed I was
blown away!
Look at all of those amazing natural ingredients!
Antioxidants everywhere! Emollients, astringents, loads of organic ingredients
with soothing properties! This is why I haven’t been this excited since Benton,
I haven’t seen a list this natural and impressive since then. Honestly this both
meets their ingredient lists (especially with their first ingredient being Aloe
Leaf Juice instead of water!) and exceeds it with this long list of skin loving
elements that score an absolute zero on the scale of potential acne triggers or
skin irritants!
The mist itself is 80ml , 2.7 oz so not too unwieldily
to travel with if you’re so inclined. I love the inclusion of actual olive leafs
in the bottle, and the mist nozzle does a nice fine spray. Little details like
that are great. It has a very natural pleasant earthy scent that I love.
Personally I’m crazy for earthy scents and don’t care much for the cloyingly
sweet perfumed smell that’s popular with a lot of other skincare, so I really
appreciate this feature. It’s very soothing and hydrating and not at all sticky
and doesn’t leave you with a film. It’s perfect to mist yourself with if you’re
in an office building or apartment building with dry recycled air like I am. I
feel like beef jerky by about mid-winter so something like this is quite
welcome. I also love to use it to mist my face right before applying my bb cream
if I’m wearing it, or after I’m done with my makeup to set it. My absolutely
favourite way to use it is after I’ve let my vitamin C serum and BHA or AHA set
for 20 minutes. Once that’s done I’ll mist myself with the Organic Flowers Olive
Leaf Mist to prepare my skin for my serum, emulsion, and cream steps. I am now
addicted to this mist, it’s my absolute favourite I’ve ever used! I love it! I
think this could totally double as a toner, the ingredients are that awesome.
It’s on the pricey side but after a look at that ingredient list and it’s lack
of fillers and crap that a lot of other brands use to cheapen their products, I
totally understand and accept that price. You get what you pay for, and in this
case you’re getting a lot.
Definitely a well deserved 5 out of 5 turtles, plus one
for being so great!

Next up I’ll be reviewing
the Whamisa Organic Flowers Water Cream!

Sake eye creams, sea kelp face 'sheets' and beauty mists made with fermented porridge oats are the latest bizarre cosmetic trends to come from the Far East
First came rice powder and snail slime. Now, a
new wave of Far Eastern beauty ingredients,
including fermented porridge oats and coconut
jelly, are set to appear on shelves.
Among them is PiteraTM, a compound created
during the sake (Japanese rice wine) fermentation process,
which was discovered after scientists noticed
that elderly brewery workers had extraordinarily soft, youthful
hands.
But the yeast compound, which has since been
snapped up by skincare brand SK-II, is far from the only
new 'wonder ingredient' to appear.
Sake, oats and fermented herbs are among new
'miracle' ingredients appearing in beauty products from the Far East
Other Far Eastern cosmetics crazes include powdered cleansers from Korea
that turn into a creamy foam
as
soon as they come into contact with water, serum sheet masks made with coconut
jelly or sea kelp,
and
fermented porridge oats and rice.
The new beauty mists, which are being marketed
in the UK and US by Glow Skincare, are also available with
other fermented herbs and flowers including chrysanthemum and dandelion
- said to help nourish and
moisturise the skin.
According to the brains behind the products, the fermentation process
intensifies the nutrient content.
It
helps to break down the ingredients, remove any toxins and absorb better into
the skin.
The
fermented ingredients also act a natural preservative, so no extra chemicals are
needed.
Botanical mists made with an array fermented rice, oats, herbs and flowers (left) and serum sheet masks
made of sea kelp are both currently in vogue
in Korea
Jun-han Park, the CEO of Whamisa, an organic
fermentation cosmetic brand, has been working with
fermentation in skincare since 1992.
He
said: 'Fermentation is a metabolic process where carbohydrates and sugars are
converted to
skin-loving enzymes and amino acids via the growth of 'good'
microorganisms like lactobacillus.
'While extensive research on fermentation in
skincare is just starting, there are already studies that show
the bio-availability of skin care products are increased when fermented,
as ingredients are 'broken down'
into smaller, more easily absorbed molecules.
'Fermentation also helps to increase the nutrient density and
concentration of ingredients, by breaking down
the
molecular structure of ingredients - for example, wine has several times the
antioxidant content of grapes.
'It
also helps to preserve the effectiveness of active ingredients and allows for
formulas to use fewer
preservatives as fermentation removes 'bad bacteria'.
Left: Skincare brand SK-II have incorporated PiteraTM into their luxury products Right: Cate Blanchett, 45, is the
brand's ambassador
Asian cosmetics companies, which have pioneered
high tech brightening ingredients and cleansing oils
along with snail slime, are famous for creating unusual new
products.
And
their efforts haven't gone unnoticed, with A-listers joining the ranks of Far
Eastern product fans,
among them SK-II ambassador, Cate Blanchett.
The
actress, 45, swears by the brand and says it is responsible for her 'radiant and
clear' complexion.
'My
skin has a radiance and clarity it didn't have 11 years ago, which is saying
something,' she explains.
'When I first started using SK-II, I was so overwhelmed by the positive
results it had – immediately, but then
over the years, long-term results - I've become quite evangelical about
it with my friends.'

Here's How To Find 'Safe' and 'Natural' Korean Beauty Products
Thanks to a
new e-commerce site.

A few months ago at Marie Claire’s very informative Global Beauty Forum, the beauty director for the magazine’s Korean edition answered a question about whether women in her country were interested in natural products. The answer? "Not really." Perceived efficacy outweighed perceived safety. However, thanks to the vast amount of development and innovation happening in the country, more Korean brands are exploring the category.
Now imagine a Venn diagram with Korean beauty in one circle, and “safe, natural” products in the other. Glow Recipe, a newly launched K-beauty e-commerce site, sits squarely in the intersection of these two concepts. Co-founders Christine Chang and Sarah Lee, both in their early thirties, met at L’Oreal Paris, where they worked for over nine years in marketing and product development. They covered both the U.S. and Korean markets, so in the still-small world of Korean beauty retailers here, their knowledge is unique.
Chang and Lee saw firsthand how western companies started looking to Korea for beauty innovation, so they knew it was time to throw their hat into the ring. They chose the tricky category of natural and safe cosmetics because they saw a demand here in the U.S. and they also felt they had the expertise to ask the right questions and curate these types of products. (Remember, the word “natural” isn’t regulated, and there are differing opinions on which ingredients are safe and which aren’t.)
Right now Glow Recipe sells seven different Korean beauty brands. Some are purely natural (and I’m defining this as containing all plant-derived ingredients) like Goodal, and others, like the dermatologist brand Dr. Oracle, aren’t necessarily. But this is by design. “The last thing we want to be doing is green-washing and substituting the word 'natural' as a blanket reassurance that our products are gentle without doing our due diligence,” Chang told me. “Our goal is to be a worry-free site where customers know they are shopping vetted products, brands and companies. While we want to prioritize natural formulations that are efficacious, we're also wary of fear-mongering, which unfortunately often happens to ingredients that have been extensively tested for safety. We rely heavily on peer-reviewed research to help make ingredient decisions for our curations.”
If you’re concerned about certain ingredients, the founders strive for transparency and list all of the ingredients for every product they sell. The products won’t contain parabens, triclosan, hydroquinone, benzophenones, BPAs, tar, talc, sodium lauryl/ laureth sulfates, aluminum, DEET, formaldehyde, PABA, toluene, camphor, PVC, phthalates or synthetic dyes. For products that contain added fragrance, Chang and Lee say they worked extensively with brands to vet that there was nothing irritating in the fragrance formula.
Now let’s get to the goods, because they’re, well, good. Whamisa’s Organic Sea Kelp Mask was a first for me — rather than paper or hydrogel, it’s an actual piece of sea kelp infused with all sorts of oils and extracts that you slap on as a sheet mask. It was a lovely experience, with a bit of salty ocean tang. Shara Shara’s Honey Bomb Ampoule, which contains three different types of honey, comes in the largest jar (for a serum anyway) that I’ve ever seen. Lee said this product, like a lot sold on Glow Recipe, is a multi-tasker, functioning as a toner, moisturizer, and serum all in one. It’s so generously sized that I’ve been smearing it all over my neck and hands, too. Whamisa’s mists, which contain actual chunks of rose petals or olive leaves, are standouts. For acne, you can find tea tree oil-based products in the Lee Ji Ham range. I also highly recommend the Caolion Blackhead Steam Pore Pack, which I’ve tried in the past and sells out quickly on other sites.

In addition to its core brands, Glow Recipe features a weekly e-pop-up shop where it will offer limited edition products. (A previous offering was a "bounce cheese cream.") You can also request custom sample boxes, or try an “editor’s pick” sample box. Prices for products on the site range from $9 for an organic hydrogel mask to $64 for a Bulgarian rose serum.
Chang and Lee ultimately hope to increase awareness of Korean
beauty products here in the U.S. and help more brands crack the market. “There’s
still a lot of the market where there’s a lack of understanding,” Lee told me.
“People think that it’s not relevant because Asian skin is ‘different.’ We
wanted to break that barrier and really make people feel comfortable.”
